What Is Medicaid?

Medicaid is health insurance for low-income adults, children, pregnant women, and disabled people. People who receive Social Security Disability and Supplemental Security Income benefits may receive both Medicare and Medicaid.  People with Medicaid typically receive additional subsidies from both the state and federal government to pay for their Medicare premiums and assist with co-pays and co-insurance costs.  They also typically receive Extra Help – a federal program that assists with prescription drug costs.  Medicare beneficiaries that receive both Medicare and Medicaid may be eligible for private Medicare plans called Special Needs Plans (SNP) and may be eligible for numerous benefits beyond those provided by Medicare and Medicaid at no additional costs.  If you receive both Medicare and Medicaid, it is vital that you seek assistance to determine if you may qualify for a SNP-  the additional benefits in a SNP typically greatly improve the quality of life of those that qualify.

What are Medicare Savings Programs?

Medicare beneficiaries with limited income and limited resources may be eligible for state assistance with Medicare Costs through Medicare Savings Programs (MSP).  These Medicare subsidies help by paying Medicare Part B premiums and, in some cases, deductibles, coinsurance, and copays.  Generally, MSP are available to Medicare beneficiaries that have limited income and resources, but have too much income or too many resource to qualify for Medicaid.
